Ender’s Game Chapter 8: Rat

In chapter 8, Ender is having a fight within himself. He believes that he is turning to be like his brother, Peter while he defeats all his attackers in the fight. He does not like the fact that he is almost like Peter. He begins to hate himself for it.

As we all see in the beginning of this chapter, the name of this chapter is Rat. What does the name, Rat have to do with the chapter itself? What is the meaning of Rat in this chapter?

Ender Wiggin, the third child of the Wiggin’s family and also our protagonist of the novel, Ender’s Game is chosen to be the hero to save the world from the buggers. I feel sympathy for him because as a kid, he has such an important task in his childhood. As we know children should have no worry,but only think about fun etc. There should be nothing that they should be so responsible for. In Ender’s life, he has to be the hero for all mankinds and saves all mankinds from destruction.

Do not let our job take over our entire life, this is the message that the author, Baker is showing through the story. Even though jobs are important, it is necessary to have some leisure time. the protagonist is turned into a potato. As a potato, he experiences something else that he never knows before. As a potato, he begins to really feel the nature, people etc. Taking some times away from what we always work on is not a bad thing. New ideas and thoughts might fly to you as you are taking some times off.

The Library of Babel

Our world is a library, which is implied in the story. It contains so many different genres, different names, different themes etc, just like the world we are in with different kind of people, different kind of jobs, different kind of opportunities, different kind of life etc. And most of the important one is knowledge that both the library and our world contain. There are two differences between our world and the library. First difference is that the library is limited. Until some day, the books in the library would be finished reading; however our world is unlimited. New things, experiences etc happen every single second. Second difference is that all the information or story in the books could not be changed anymore once it finished printing; however our world is changing every single second as well.

The Veldt

In this story, it has a strong message for the readers. As nowadays, the technologies are becoming more advance and advance. As mankind, we become more adopted and depended on those technologies. Sometimes we might even forget our duty as human being. The story, “The Veldt” clearly shows the point of how the George’s family is overwhelmed by the automated house. Due to the dependency of the high tech, George and Lydia forget their duty as parents and the children forget their role as kids. The high tech destroys the relationship of a family. Using high techs are good, but never overdo it.

The story happened in the dream again. It opened the scene with Young Goodman Brown leaving off to the forest to complete his task. In the story, it mentioned mostly about the devil. What are the significance of the name, Goodman and Devil?

Cheshire Cat Wonderland

As in Chapter six, it mentioned about a Cheshire Cat. There is a image of the cat on the tree and looked down at Alice. When I saw this image, I felt that the cat was pretty evil, maybe the color of the image contributes some effect, but I personally did not like this cat. I hated the smile that the cat had. There were two images of the cat, but the smile of it always clearly showed in two. The smile gave me a feeling that the cat would do something that caused Alice to be in danger when I was reading it. The smile was pretty creepy and somber. But it was a relief , till the end, it did not do anything bad to Alice …..

When Alice was talking to the Caterpillar, the Caterpillar asked Alice to say the poem, Father William. I felt that there is a significance for Alice to say this poem. The meaning of the poem is that the father is at a pretty old age and he is not acting right at the age he is supposed to. It is there to let Alice understand that she is not acting right at her age because in her age, everything should be simplify and easy. There shouldn’t be too much confusing about life, identity else. Everything should be one quick step answer.

I was surprised to see how people are so addicted to the Internet in nowadays. There are 70 percent of teenagers are addicted to the Internet and large number of them have a health problem due to that. With the addiction, people are online a day or even stay up the entire night. People even died because of that due to the lacking of food and water.

It is pretty ironic because the schools are introduced the Internet to the kids when they are little and while we are having frontline news on the Internet that states Internet is doing bad to us from any aspects, like brain, health etc. In other hand, it also says that Internet is bringing people together from different culture, environment and area.

Fantasy

As you can see, I chose the word, “Fantasy.” In my own word, fantasy is something is not realistic. It rarely happens in reality and it is also something that makes up by people. Fantasy can also be a genre of media. The film, Fantastic Four can be categorized as fantasy because in the film, the super power of the characters is something that won’t happen in real life and it is made up by the author. These powers are what people do dream to have.
